All forms of energy are measured in British Thermal Units (BTU's). Anthracite Coal contains 12,500 to 13,000 BTU's per pound. Here is a comparison to different heating sources and how much is needed to equal a ton (2,000 lbs.) of Anthracite coal:
* 186 gallons of heating oil
* 25,412 cubic feet of natural gas
* 7,677 KWH of electricity
* 2 cords of dry hardwood (stacked 4 ft. wide x 4 ft. high by 16 ft. long
A ton of Anthracite coal costs approximately $150.00 per ton delivered within a 50 mile area from the producer. You can make your own comparison by contrasting the costs of other forms of energy needed to equal one ton of Anthracite coal.
